How to Get Your Yard Ready for Hurricane Season in Central Florida

Hurricane season in Central Florida runs from June 1 through November 30, and if you've lived in Orlando for more than a year, you already know — it's not a matter of if a storm will hit, it's a matter of when.
The good news? A little prep work now can protect your property, your neighbors, and your family when the wind picks up. Here's exactly what to do to get your yard hurricane-ready before the season kicks off.
1. Trim Your Trees and Hedges Now — Before the Storm
This is the single most important thing you can do. Overgrown branches and dead limbs become flying projectiles in high winds. They can take out windows, damage roofs, and injure people.
What to do:
•Remove any dead or dying branches from trees
•Trim back branches that hang over your roof, driveway, or fence
•Cut back overgrown hedges so they have less wind resistance
•Look for trees that are leaning or have shallow root systems — those are the most dangerous
If you're not sure whether a tree is safe, call a local arborist. It's worth the peace of mind.
2. Clear Out Yard Clutter and Loose Items
Walk your yard and look at it through the eyes of a 100 mph wind. Anything that isn't bolted down is a potential hazard.
Things to move inside or secure before a storm:
•Patio furniture, umbrellas, and cushions
•Potted plants and planters
•Lawn decorations, garden statues, and wind chimes
•Grills and outdoor cooking equipment
•Children's toys, bikes, and play equipment
•Trash cans and recycling bins
If you've been putting off a yard cleanout — old furniture sitting outside, broken equipment, piles of debris — now is the time to get rid of it. That stuff becomes dangerous in a storm.
3. Clean Out Your Gutters and Drains
Orlando gets heavy rain during hurricane season, and clogged gutters can cause serious water damage to your home.
Before June 1:
•Clear leaves, twigs, and debris from gutters and downspouts
•Check that water drains away from your foundation
•Clear any yard drains or French drains of debris
•Look for low spots in your yard where water pools — those will flood first
4. Mow Your Lawn Short Before a Major Storm
A freshly mowed lawn is easier to inspect and clean up after a storm. Long grass also holds more standing water, which can attract mosquitoes after the rain.
Aim to mow your lawn 2–3 days before a named storm is expected to hit. Don't mow right before — you want the grass to have time to recover a little before the stress of a storm.
5. Mulch Your Beds — But Not Too Deep
Mulch helps retain moisture during the dry spells between storms, but too much mulch can wash away in heavy rain and clog your drains.
Keep mulch at 2–3 inches deep in your garden beds. If you've been meaning to refresh your mulch before summer, do it now — it'll protect your plants' roots during both the dry heat and the heavy rains.
6. As You Prepare for Hurricane Season Yard Prep in Orlando, Know What to Do After the Storm
Even with perfect prep, storms leave a mess. After a hurricane or tropical storm passes through Central Florida, you may be dealing with:
•Fallen branches and tree debris across your yard and driveway
•Damaged fencing from wind or fallen trees
•Construction debris if any part of your home or shed was damaged
•Waterlogged yard waste that needs to be bagged and removed
This is where a local junk removal and yard cleanup team comes in. Instead of spending your weekend hauling debris to the curb, you can have it cleared out in a single visit.
